Senior Dog Care Tips

Is your dog approaching—or already in—his golden years? Our canine pals are always cute, but they somehow manage to become extra adorable as they age. Fido’s needs will change a little bit as he grows older, so you’ll want to make some adjustments to his care regimen. Read on for some tips from a Marshall County, MS vet on keeping a senior dog happy and healthy.

Comfy Beds

As far as Fido is concerned, comfy beds are one of life’s greatest treasures. (We can’t really argue with that one.) Orthopedic beds are great options for older dogs, because of the extra support they offer.

Proper Exercise

Fido won’t be as playful as he once was, and he may be more interested in napping than in chasing squirrels. However, your furry buddy will still need some activity, even if it’s just a short walk around the block. You may find you love taking a relaxing stroll with your cute pet plodding along beside you!

Good Food

Fido will need a high-quality senior pet food. He may also benefit from certain supplements, such as fish oil or glucosamine. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Veterinary Care

Speaking of veterinarians, your pooch may need to come in more often as he ages. Regular exams greatly increase the chances of any medical issues being caught—and therefore treated—early. Ask your vet to recommend an appointment schedule.

Climate Control

Older dogs are very sensitive to extreme weather. Limit Fido’s outdoor time when it’s hot or cold out.

Nails

Overgrown nails can be very problematic for Fido. He may change his gait to compensate for the discomfort. This will put a lot of strain his bones and joints. Keep those claws clipped!

Doggy Comforts

Small touches can also help keep your furry friend more comfortable. Pet ramps will help Fido climb stairs and/or get on and off couches. Elevated dishes are also beneficial, as they are easier for dogs to eat from than bowls on the floor.

Tail Wags

Love is the magic ingredient in any pet care routine. Spend lots of time with Fido. Talk to him, play with him, and just enjoy this special time in his life. Don’t skimp on those belly rubs, either!
